Bio

Qualifications and professional expertise

I bring more than 25 years of experience in education, teaching French and German and leading learning at classroom, departmental and whole-school level.

As a qualified and highly experienced Modern Languages teacher, I have taught pupils across Key Stage 3, GCSE and A level. This has given me a detailed understanding of how language skills develop and of the challenges pupils commonly experience with vocabulary, grammar, listening, speaking, reading and writing.

I am also the author of a best-selling MFL book. The book provides practical, evidence-informed guidance for language teachers and reflects my strong interest in how effective teaching, careful explanation and purposeful practice can improve pupils’ confidence and achievement.

My wider professional experience includes:

  • Contributing to the development of Modern Languages curricula;

  • Receiving the UK German Teacher Award from the German Embassy

  • Leading professional development for teachers

  • Contributing to TeachMeet events to share effective classroom practice

  • Supporting teaching quality and school improvement

  • Many years of leadership experience in schools.

My approach to tuition

My lessons combine high expectations with patience, encouragement and clear explanations. Tuition is tailored to each learner rather than delivered through a one-size-fits-all programme.

I begin by identifying the pupil’s existing strengths, areas for development and personal goals. Lessons are then planned to address those priorities, whether the learner needs to strengthen grammatical foundations, improve examination technique, become more confident in speaking or work towards the highest possible grade.

My teaching is:

  • Personalised to the individual learner

  • Carefully structured and evidence-informed

  • Supportive, purposeful and appropriately challenging

  • Closely connected to GCSE or A-level requirements where relevant

  • Focused on lasting understanding rather than short-term memorisation

  • Supported by regular feedback on progress and next steps

Above all, I want pupils to leave each lesson feeling that French or German makes more sense, that progress is achievable and that they are becoming increasingly confident and independent as language learners.
